Chili flower

Chili flower, originally uploaded by kitschenette.

I went to the fruit n veg market with Carla again this morning, and we got a great haul, more delicious rocket, voluptuously ripe avocadoes and tomatoes, and two bunches of these fantastically scarlet, pointy chili 'flowers'. I don't cook too much with chilis, but I couldn't resist them - they looked just so, so beautiful.

New coffee pot

I bought this coffee pot from a friend who was moving house, and I've been gazing awestruck at its shiny round surface ever since I brought it home.

Brussels sprouts

I'm not usually a fan of these brassicas, but I saw them at the supermarket theother day and they looked so neat and fresh and crisp that I couldn't resist. I lightly sauteed them in some butter with a squeeze of lemon juice and some salt and pepper until just browned and wilted at the edges, but still with some crunch. The slight bitterness was very, very good with a balsamic-seared pork chop and tiny tiny (think marble size) roasted new potatoes from the farm up the road.

Rucola, tomatoes

Rucola, tomatoes, originally uploaded by kitschenette.

On Saturday Carla and I made a trip out to the Engrosmarkt (wholesale fruit n veg market) to buy for our neighbourhood fruit n veg coop (8 families taking it in turns to go and buy for the rest). I was chuffed to find some fantastic rucola, so I bought a whole trayful just for me. So delicious, peppery, bitter and fresh. I've been eating it by the bundle for lunch.

Weekly box of goodness

Last week's fruit n veg haul costing a grand total of CHF12 per box (those readers resident in Switzerland will appreciate what a TOTAL bargain this is - here you pay CHF5 for one pineapple, and CHF3 for one small, usually wilted bundle of rucola).

Small hands

Kneading, originally uploaded by kitschenette.

Today Lola had great fun making the dough for tonight's pizza. She did a great job.

I am always struck by how small her hands are, in contrast to Max's hands at her age, which were always chubby and robust. Hers are small, with long fingers and small palms. When I hold her hand mine engulfs hers.
